Yelp Official Blog: It’s time to break out the Robot, Yelp for Android is HERE

The Yelp for Android app is the 5th member of Yelp’s mobile family joining the iPhone, Blackberry, Palm Pre and WAP. Like all new Yelp mobile applications, we focus on releasing a useful and awesome product first and then add more bells and whistles over time. We particularly wanted to make sure that all you Droid lovers got your wish answered this holiday season and had Yelp guiding your way as you shop, travel and be merry. You can plan for more updates before the New Year, but immediate features include:

  • By leveraging location-aware technology, the Yelp for Android app determines your current location and then lets you search for nearby businesses, read reviews and access a moveable Google map that enables you to easily zoom in/out on a location and redefine your search based on that geographic area.
  • In addition to searching nearby businesses, you can also filter reviews by “Price,” “Open Now,” “Special Offers” and browse “Hot on Yelp”
  • Like all our other mobile applications, Yelp for Android works everywhere Yelp is available (US, Canada, UK and Ireland)
  • It is available for download on Android Market via your handset.

Google Goggles – Use pictures to search the web

Google Goggles lets you use pictures taken with your mobile phone to search the web. It’s ideal for things that aren’t easy to describe in words. There’s no need to type or speak your query – all you have to do is open the app, snap a picture, and wait for your search results.

Google Goggles works better with certain types of queries. Try taking pictures of books & DVDs, landmarks, logos, contact info, artwork, businesses, products, barcodes, or text. Currently, it’s not so good when taking pictures of animals, plants, cars, furniture, or apparel.

For the best results when taking pictures, hold your phone in “left landscape” mode, as shown below, and press the on-screen shutter button with your right thumb.

Note: Google Goggles is currently available for Android devices running Android 1.6 and above.

Google Maps gets updated to version 3.3 for Windows Mobile and Symbian « Boy Genius Report.

Windows Mobile and Symbian users don’t ever have to worry about getting lost or having to remember their favorite places again. Google recently announced that Google Maps has been upgraded to version 3.3 for Windows Mobile and Symbian. The upgrade now allows you mark your favorite items with a star and keep those synced between your computer and phone. As soon as you upgrade on your WinMo or Symbian device, Google will ask if you want those starred items synchronized between your phone and Google Account. For those of you that rely on starred items in Google Maps, you’ll also be happy to know that you don’t have to go through each favorite spot individually on your phone.

  • (2009 – November 21) Version 0.1.3 Alpha
    * Homescreen clock now supports whatever your locale time format is set to. In other words, if you use a 24h clock it works and displays correctly now.
    * TouchOne can display up to 1000 app shortcuts on 50-64 screens, depending on your device and how many apps will fit. VGA/WVGA/WQVGA display 20 apps per app screen, whereas other resolutions display 16.
    * Substantial memory savings, application has a lighter footprint for all devices. This should help alot with memory issues that QVGA devices have with only 64-128 MB ram. NOTE: Memory usage depends hgeavily upon how many applications you have installed. A possible workaround for those with a gazillion apps, is an optional app selection list that lets you choose what app shortcuts display, this may be something I will add in the future.
    * Widgets and Application will save settings now. If you have the background changed, or certain widgets enabled/disabled. Your settings will persist through a soft reset.
    * TouchOne now has a settings option to “Refresh Applications” that will detect new applications that have been installed/uninstalled and update the apps accordingly.
